Peckham car park cocktail bar named best rooftop spot in Europe

A cocktail joint on top of a multi-storey car park in the London district of Peckham has been ranked as the best rooftop bar in Europe, according to a study from holiday guide Big 7 Travel.

The rankings, which use aggregated scores from social media results (with some Big 7 Travel editorial input), listed 50 of Europe’s best rooftop bars.

Trumping competition from the rest of the continent, Frank’s Cafe in South London might not be in the glamorous location, but that played to its advantage, with Big 7 Travel praising its “simplicity”, “excellent, seasonal food”, and its incredible panoramic views of the UK capital.

Set up by not-for-profit arts organisation Bold Tendencies, Frank’s Cafe has been summer fixture in Peckham since 2009.

Its wine list is short and to the point, featuring a few offerings from Italy and France. The cocktail selection is more extensive and includes classics such as an Aperol Spritz or a White Port & Tonic, as well as more bespoke offerings, like Peaches ‘n’ Cream, which combines Martell with Frank’s own peach syrup.

The food menu draws inspiration from across the culinary world, with a New York-inspired pastrami brisket bun, Indian style vada pav, and lamb breast kebab sitting side by side.

The full top 10 list of rooftop bars is as follows:

    1. Frank’s Cafe, London, UK
    2. Azotea del Circulo, Madrid, Spain
    3. The Roof, Reykjavík, Iceland
    4. Schweizerhof Flims, Flims, Switzerland
    5. Oroya, Madrid, Spain
    6. 16ROOF, Istanbul, Turkey
    7. Sky Bar by SEEN, Lisbon, Portugal
    8. Patchwork at Sa Punta, Ibiza, Spain
    9. Skyline Bar 20up, Hamburg, Germany
    10. Mama Shelter, Bordeaux, France
